Pankaj Sharma - MBBS FRCS (Orth)


Pankaj Sharma is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon, with an NHS practice at Manchester Royal Infirmary. He specialises in sports injuries and arthritis of the hip and knee joint.

Mr Sharma qualified from Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospitals Medical School in London. His early surgical training was in Cardiff and London. He subsequently underwent higher surgical training in Orthopaedics in the Southampton area. Following this, he was selected for a prestigious Canadian Orthopaedic Association Fellowship in Arthroscopic Surgery. This training took place in Toronto, Canada. During this time, he was involved in the management of professional athletes from the Toronto Blue Jays (baseball) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (ice hockey). In addition to this, Pankaj undertook an Arthroplasty Fellowship at Sunnybrook Hospital at the well respected Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre in Toronto.

His surgical practice is almost exclusively hip and knee surgery, with a particular expertise in arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, ligament reconstruction, articular cartilage repair, surgical management of the young patient with arthritis, joint replacement and knee revision surgery. In addition, he has extensive experience of managing trauma patients.

During the consultation, Mr Sharma obtains an accurate history, carefully examines all patients and arranges appropriate investigations if required. When the diagnosis has been made, he will discuss the condtion with you to ensure that you have a personalised treatment plan. This may include operative or nonoperative treatment. The risks and benefits of each will be fully explained to allow you to make an informed decision about your treatment.

During his medical career, Pankaj has given presentations at national and international scientific conferences on his research. He has always been actively involved in basic science and clinical research. He has authored several chapters for Orthopaedic Surgery textbooks, and has written a textbook for orthopaedic trainees in their preparation for the FRCS examination.
